Sam Appleton to Retire at End of 2026

Sam Appleton will not race triathlon professionally beyond the end of 2026. The Australian announced the decision on Instagram on 3 September, closing one of the steadiest careers over 70.3 of the past decade.

13 years on the start line, 20 wins

Appleton is 36 and has been doing triathlon since the age of 13, racing professionally for over a decade. In that time he collected 20 wins, mostly on the IRONMAN circuit. The 70.3 distance was his calling card. He won four times in five starts at Santa Rosa and Vineman in California (2015, 2017, 2018, 2019). Add three wins in Geelong (2017, 2018, 2022) and two second places on the same course (2015, 2020).

At the 70.3 world championship he finished in the top ten four years running, from 2016 to 2019, with a best of 4th in 2017. That puts him among the most consistent athletes of his generation. He never won the world title.

What he said

Appleton did not hide the emotion in his farewell post. “After more than 20 years of racing triathlon, at the end of 2026 I am putting the tools away”, he wrote, referring to his whole path in the sport rather than only the professional years. He added: “It became my life, my identity, the thing I wanted to put everything into”.

Summing up what he achieved, he admitted: “I have achieved far more than I ever thought was possible in this sport”. He noted that the end of his professional career is not the end of his involvement in triathlon. “Stopping professional racing does not mean triathlon stops being part of who I am. I still hope to stay around the sport in some role once I close the professional racing chapter”.

He closed the post briefly: “What a journey it has been”.

What comes next

Before the final goodbye he wants to start in “one or two bucket-list races”. He did not say which ones.

For the age-group 70.3 community this ends an era. Appleton’s name turned up regularly near the top of start lists on the courses he counted among his favourites.
