Tawau is an hour and a half by minibus to Semporna. Semporna, which is the gateway to dive haven in Sabah is 45 mins away by boat to the following beautiful islands: i) Sipadan island which is listed among the world's top ten diving spots ii)Kapalai island iii)Mabul island iv)Mataking island For travelers with longer vacation period, there are express boats from Tawau to the town of Nunukan and Tarakan which is in the Indonesian part of Borneo island. Tawau itself has got its own attractions in the form of the multi ethnicity of its population hence its cuisines as well as culture. Since Tawau was historically ranked as one of the largest cocoa producer in the world, there is the Teck Guan Cocoa Museum and Teck Guan Cocoa village. There is also Tawau Hills Park for nature lovers which also has 3 popular small mountains namely Mt Lucia, Mt Magdalena and Mount Maria which is fun to climb for enthusiast. However, booking has to be made in advance as a guide and permit are compulsory.
