The host of Ourém Fatima Granfondo, a major pilgrimage destination, Ourém also boasts a vibrant cycling culture, evident in its hosting of prestigious events like the Tour of Portugal, the Tour of Spain and the National Road Cycling and Paracycling Championships. As the season’s final race, the city will also crown the Superprestige Trophy winners, the largest amateur cycling competition in Portugal. Athletes earn points based on their performance in the minifondo, mediofondo and granfondo distances. The routes, free from major elevation changes, wind through the region’s rich landscape and diverse wildlife. Participants will pass through Fátima, a renowned Marian pilgrimage site, Agroal (famous for its river beach), Freixianda (severely damaged during the French invasions), Pêras Ruivas (home to the rare Seiça river brook lamprey) and the legendary Medieval Castle of Ourém, one of the country’s most beautiful. These numerous points of interest make the Ourém-Fátima Granfondo a must-see event.
