Peter Hutton Takes Over as PTO Interim Chair

The Professional Triathletes Organisation has announced a change at the very top. Chris Kermode, who has run the organisation since 2022, is stepping down as chair of the board. His seat goes, for now on an interim basis, to Peter Hutton: former head of Eurosport, former director of sport at Meta, and a PTO board member since December 2020.

The timing matters. PTO and World Triathlon are preparing the launch of the Triathlon World Tour 2027, a new joint series meant to pull the fragmented professional calendar into one shape. The choice of the person to steer the organisation through that manoeuvre says a good deal about where the sport is heading.

Who Peter Hutton is

This is not a typical endurance industry appointment. Hutton has 40 years in sports media behind him, from reporter at BBC Radio Leeds, through India IMG and Ten Sports on the Indian subcontinent, to the CEO seat at Fox Sports Asia. In 2015 he took over Eurosport and in the same season was named Sports Executive of the Year, with Eurosport taking Sports Channel of the Year. Buying the European Olympic rights is also on his record.

Then came five years at Meta, where Hutton handled relationships across the whole sports industry: Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, Portal, Oculus. He negotiated who posts what and where. In other words, he knows everyone who decides how sports content is distributed worldwide.

He joined the PTO board in December 2020. Now he moves one chair along, into the chairmanship, in an interim capacity but with a mandate covering the most consequential stretch ahead.

Why Kermode is leaving

Chris Kermode arrived at PTO in 2022 with a record that carries weight well beyond tennis. He ran the ATP, the entire professional men’s tennis tour, for years. He brought triathlon reputational capital, structure, and a working vocabulary for talking to investors.

Under him PTO moved from concept to a real global series. T100 opened up markets and landed a broadcast deal, with coverage fully free to air on TriathlonLive.tv from 2026, and in May 2026 the organisation announced a three-year deal with Sokin, a payments partner and title sponsor of T100 San Francisco and Escape From Alcatraz.

The official statement talks about preparing for the next phase of global growth. Translated out of PR: PTO decided that the person who delivers media and social partnerships for the Triathlon World Tour 2027 has a different profile from the person who put the organisation in order internally. Hence Hutton.

What it means for T100 and for the sport

The first signal is obvious. PTO is betting on media and social distribution as its main growth lever. Hutton spent five years at Meta working out how sport lives in Facebook timelines, Instagram Reels and WhatsApp Channels. T100 is likely to start appearing on phone screens rather than only inside the TriathlonLive app.

The second concerns the Triathlon World Tour 2027 itself. It is a 12-year partnership between PTO and World Triathlon, announced in December 2025. In practice it is an attempt to end the calendar competition between PTO and the federation and build one legible competitive structure for professionals. Hutton has to deliver it from the professional organisation’s side. Three things will decide it: a sane calendar for the athletes with fewer clashes, real money in the prize pool, and distribution that sells the sport.

The third is less visible: the word interim in the title. PTO is not writing “permanent chair”. That suggests a search for a permanent chairman is probably running. Whether Hutton stays will most likely be answered by the first season of the Triathlon World Tour.

What changes for age-group athletes

The simplest answer is more visibility for triathlon in the feed. The free T100 stream is the start, and with Hutton on board, clips, short formats and a stronger social presence are the reasonable expectation. For anyone who has had to hunt for race coverage, that is a real difference in access.

For athletes chasing the top of the sport, the Triathlon World Tour 2027 is the item to watch. If PTO and World Triathlon genuinely align their calendars, the qualification path to the highest levels becomes readable: national championships, then World Triathlon cups, then T100 races. Less chaos, fewer date clashes. In theory, at least.
