How to build a season around one A race

Most amateur seasons are built by accident. A friend enters something, a discount lands in an inbox, and by March the calendar holds five races that all want to be the important one. A season built on purpose looks different: one race that matters, a few that serve it, and nothing that fights it.

One A race, and only one

The A race is the one the training block is designed around, the one that gets a full taper and a recovery week after it. A season can hold two if they sit far enough apart, usually eight weeks or more, but two A races in a six week window is one A race and one disappointment.

Pick it before anything else goes in the calendar, because its date fixes everything behind it.

B races do a job

A B race is not a smaller A race. It is a training session with a number on. Each one should answer a question that training cannot:

  • Does the nutrition plan survive race intensity.
  • How long do transitions actually take under pressure.
  • What happens to pacing in a crowd.
  • Does the kit chafe after two hours.

That is also why a B race sits four to eight weeks before the A race, at a shorter distance. Close enough for the lessons to be useful, far enough that the recovery costs nothing.

The honest question about volume

Every race in a season takes a taper and a recovery week, so four races cost roughly eight weeks of compromised training. That is the real limit on how many an amateur can hold, not enthusiasm and not entry fees. It is the same arithmetic that decides how much mid season volume is actually needed.

Build the year backwards

  1. Fix the A race date and enter it.
  2. Count back the training block and mark its start.
  3. Place one or two B races inside that block.
  4. Add a tune up two to three weeks out, short and sharp.
  5. Leave the rest of the calendar empty on purpose.

The empty weeks are not wasted. They absorb illness, work and the weekend when nothing goes to plan, which every season has.

Racelify lists triathlons worldwide by date and distance, which makes the backwards build a job for one evening.
