Frodeno Runs 15:48 and Goes Unrecognised

Jente van Bos ran a 5 km in exactly 16 minutes. For most of the course he held a loose conversation with the runner alongside him. On the last straight the other man said goodbye, changed gear and rode away. Only after the finish did the Belgian find out he had been running with Jan Frodeno.

Frodeno stopped the clock at 15:48, twelve seconds ahead of Van Bos. The race was the Kick Off Run, an open 5 km event that opened the weekend of the T100 final in Doha on 10 December 2025.

What 15:48 means from a retired athlete

That is 3:10 per kilometre held for five kilometres. Frodeno was 44 at the time and had not raced professionally since 2024.

It is worth adding that this was a social run rather than a target race. Frodeno spent most of the distance talking, which means a pace at which full sentences are still possible.

Unrecognised

The best part of the story is Van Bos’s reaction after the finish. The Belgian admitted straight out that he had no idea who he was running with. The clip spread because there was nothing staged about it: two runners in similar shape, a conversation, and then one of them accelerates.

Frodeno after his career

Frodeno won Kona three times, in 2015, 2016 and 2019, and holds Olympic gold from Beijing 2008. The professional starts are gone; the form is not. In 2026 he moved to the mountains and won his age group on the OCC at UTMB.

The 5 km in Doha and the age group win in Chamonix point the same way. Frodeno swapped a full calendar for a handful of selected events, and evidently did not cut the training volume.
