The Mugello Marathon is the oldest marathon in Italy. There were no marathons yet in the early 1970s. In those years, the only existing marathons were organized to select the best runners for the Olympic Games. They were races limited to a few dozen athletes. In 1974 a group of passionate runners from Borgo San Lorenzo such as Franco Sargenti, Roberto Gherardi, Mario Boretti planned the first marathon in Italy called "First Marathon of Mugello" (moreover run at night in that first year). Another reason to run the Mugello Marathon is its magnificent cultural and natural setting. The heart of the Mugello valley can be said to be a stone's throw from Florence, yet it remains firmly anchored in the Tuscan countryside with all the familiar plethora of iconic must-sees such as the rolling hills topped however in this case by a superb crown of mountains, a splendid view of vineyards and olive groves and small medieval and Renaissance villages, such as Scarperia, which is right inside the marathon route.
