The International Ultra Trail “Wild River Vjosa” is a cultural and sports initiative jointly developed by the sports association “Marathon Albania” and the municipalities of Gjirokastër district, including Çarshovë, Përmet, Këlcyrë, Memaliaj, and Tepelenë. Supported by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, this project aims to organize a marathon along the scenic Vjosa River. The event features multiple race categories: an 11 km mini-marathon, a 26 km half-marathon, and ultra-marathon distances of 44 km, 67 km, and 100 km, promoting regional unity through sports and cultural activity. The marathon path follows the “Wild Vjosa” river, known for its cultural and historical richness, uniting Albanian-speaking regions and Europe. The 67 km terrestrial route features soft terrain with minor elevation changes and takes runners through scenic villages like Çarshovë, Përmet, and Tepelenë. The path includes meadows, vineyards, and the stunning Qelova Church, with rest stations every 5-7 km offering refreshments. Participants will traverse the Këlcyrës Gorge, enjoy a lunch break with regional dishes, and continue through lush landscapes and historic bridges like Peshtan and Dragot. Runners will see picturesque views as the path leads through pine-covered hills towards Memaliaj, finally reaching Tepelenë’s historic fortress. The trail, designed exclusively for runners and walkers, only intersects with highways via footbridges spaced 6-8 km apart. The strong currents and cold springs of the Vjosa River make it impassable even during low water flow, but the distant highway is visible from the trail. The marathon offers a unique blend of tourism, sports, culture, and health, enabling participants to experience the region’s rich cultural heritage. Detailed information on historical landmarks and tourist sites is provided to immerse runners in local culture. Organized by "Maraton Albania" and approved by local municipalities, the route meets trail marathon standards.
